Safety and Compliance

Per PS-98, disclosure of significant financial interests (SFI) and any externally funded travel is required for investigators with externally funded sponsored projects. The SFI disclosure form must be completed annually and updated within 30 days of discovering or acquiring any new or previously undisclosed interests. You will not be approved to participate in LSU sponsored projects without a completed and current SFI disclosure on file.

Per PM-11, outside employment by LSU employees must be disclosed for administrative review and approval. This includes direct employment with any non-university employer, contracts for consulting or other professional services, and any self-employment or operation of a business.

For questions, please contact the Office of Research Compliance, Integrity & Security, compliance@lsu.edu.

To confirm if you are engaged in a research project subject to export control regulations, please contact the Office of Research Compliance, Integrity & Security, compliance@lsu.edu.

For questions, please contact Environmental Health & Safety, lsuehs@lsu.edu.

Human Subjects

LSU policy states all activities involving human participants must be presented to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for a determination as to whether the activity needs IRB approval. For questions, please contact irb@lsu.edu. See also NIH’s Decision Tool: Am I Doing Human Subjects Research?

  • If your project includes human subjects research and requires IRB review, submission through the GeauxGrants IRB Module is required

Animal Subjects

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) has the primary responsibility for ethical oversight of all activities involving the care and use of vertebrate animals, including, but not limited to, establishing policies and procedures, inspecting facilities, reviewing and approving research protocols, and monitoring adherence to approved protocols. All personnel involved with the care and use of animals must be adequately educated, trained, and/or qualified in basic principles of laboratory animal science to help ensure high-quality science and animal well-being. For questions, please contact iacuc@lsu.edu.

  • If a project involves vertebrate animals, an animal protocol submission through the GeauxGrants IACUC Module is required; a just-in-time approval can be given at the time of grant application

Radiation

The Radiation Safety Office (RSO) is responsible for implementing radiation control policies and ensuring safe practices to be fully in compliance with federal and state regulations and to ensure individual well-being and the integrity of the university. For questions, please contact adavila@lsu.edu.

The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) oversees the use of various biological agents that have the potential to result in accidental exposures to University personnel, liability and public relations issues, community outbreaks of disease, or damage to natural ecosystems.

All biological research, teaching, and/or diagnostics at LSU and the LSU AgCenter are to be conducted using accepted biological safety practices and in full compliance with university policies and all applicable federal rules and regulations relating to such activities. Accordingly, all projects involving biological material, recombinant DNA, pathogens of humans, livestock, animals, and plants, and biological toxins must be registered and reviewed by the Inter-Institutional Biological and Recombinant DNA Safety Committee (IBRDSC). Any LSU employee doing lab work on LSU property will likely need IBC approval prior to conducting research.  Please visit the IBC website to learn about Research Requiring IBC Review.

For questions, please contact Abigail Fish, afish5@lsu.edu.

Congrats on Your Award—Now, What?

If expenditures will be incurred before an agreement is fully executed, the Principal Investigator (PI) may request a tentative grant number. A tentative grant should only be requested when a PI is sure of funding. Obtaining a tentative grant will allow a PI to begin working on a project in anticipation of the fully executed agreement. However, the tentative grant may not be established until a proposal is submitted and all required special committee and compliance approvals are obtained.

Please contact your department's business manager to initiate an AS 494 – Request to Establish Tentative Grant.

Once a grant, contract, or agreement involving a subaward is fully executed, the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) will initiate the subaward issuance process, prepare the draft subaward, route for approvals, and create the requisition in Workday. You can reach the Office of Sponsored Programs about this at subs@lsu.edu.

Please contact your department administrator for assistance with proposing and initiating a subaward.

The Office of Innovation & Technology Commercialization (ITC) manages LSU’s innovative technologies. ITC works with researchers to protect their innovations and get them to the marketplace for the public's benefit. The first step in this process is telling ITC about your innovation (i.e., completing a disclosure).

  • If you have work that could lead to potentially patentable technology or copyrightable materials, consider submitting a Disclosure Form to ITC before sharing your work with other researchers or the public (manuscript, presentation, etc.).

If you’re interested in learning more about protecting your intellectual property and commercializing your technology, please contact the Office of Innovation & Technology Commercialization, itc@lsu.edu.

LSU has numerous state-of-the-art instruments available for LSU researchers on a fee-per-use basis. Visit the Advanced Microscopy and Analytical Core.
